Family Farm Barn Plans for Todays Hobby Farmer

Thinking of building a barn?  In 1919 farms were smaller and farm buildings were designed for a family farm.  They knew a lot a lot about what the animals needed and how the building should be designed.  If you are thinking of raising livestock on a small scale on your own place you will learn a lot by reading through this catalog.

These plans were develped prior to the rise of big agriculture and reflect a completely different approach to the family farm. They were designed to support a diverse livestock mixture of cows, horses, hogs, chickens etc.

We often think that solar energy, efficient design to minimize labor, and concern for the health and well being of livestock is a recent development. When you read through the comments about how and why these barns were designed the way they were, you soon realize these things were known and considered in building designs almost one hundred years ago.

These buildings were also erected without help from power tools and equuipment.

Shown below are thumbnail images of pages from the 1919 Star Line Catalog.  If you click on an image you will go to a page with a full size image of that page as well as all the text.

The links to Plans 2, Plans 3, and Plans 4, on the left, will let you "Page" through the catalog.
